What does your catalytic converter do and why do they go bad?
The catalytic converter is located in the exhaust system and is packed with a ceramic type of material that is coated with some precious metals that perform a “catalytic” reaction that converts the polluting form of hot burnt exhaust gasses to a hotter less polluting gas.
Each vehicle has to have a state approved part that was made for your vehicle's make, model year and engine size (the state of California has strict requirements). The replacement catalytic converter application and part number must be verified with the under hood sticker of your vehicle that shows the engine family number. Non-state approved, used, random or just any cheap converter cannot be installed. The catalytic converter must be approved by the state of California to be installed in your vehicle.
Damage to the catalytic converter can happen when there is a failure with one of the computer’s electronic controls or a mechanical failure of the engine causing a continuous misfire. Additional ways the catalytic converter can get damaged are; the engine has not been properly tuned, the engines fuel control is allowing too much fuel, poor maintenance, or the engine has been using oil or coolant. When oil or coolant is introduced into the exhaust system these fluids can and will contaminate or coat the internals of the catalytic converter rendering it ineffective and turning on the check engine light ON. When this happens the repair becomes very costly.
It is very important to have us determine what possible defects with your vehicle caused your original catalytic converter to fail. If you fail to have the defect or the cause of the damage repaired, before you have the replacement catalytic converter installed you will not get any warranty if and when the replacement catalytic converter fails again.
Listed are the main conditions that will void the warranty of your catalytic converter; signs of external damage (hitting something), indications of overheating (engine misfire), discoloration of the outside of the converter (which can indicate overheating), melting of the internals (too rich fuel mixture, poor fuel control) rattling of the internals (broken internals), excessive residue on the internal catalyst material (which would indicate engine problems).
In order to receive any warranty the replacement catalytic converter has to have no visible signs of damage and you must have all of the paper work showing any and all repairs prior to replacement. Then the part will be sent to the manufacturer who has the final word as to the warranty. If the warranty is approved, we will then reimburse to you the customer the cost of the part and labor.
